Given the nature of advances in computer processing and rapid data analysis, which allow for the simulation of intelligence or conclusions based on associated data, and the language program capacity of computers simulating human language, it becomes imperative for the Church to set some guidelines and expectations on the use of or limits of use of AI-sourced data in our writing.
The Headquarters Church is moving forward on guidelines on the use of AI in the Church’s operations and publishing. Hence it is important that the Canadian office largely mirror the Headquarters position.
In general we do not condone the use of AI generated material to compose all or portions of sermons, Bible studies, speeches, articles, text for TW programs, Viewpoints, White Boards, TWPs or other material central to expressing or projecting our message.
We are a Spiritual institution and must be guided by the knowledge and understanding resultant from efforts of the human mind studying, understanding and expressing a message under the guidance of the Bible, prayer and God’s Holy Spirit.
AI may be a tool to improve the quality of written composition and grammatical structure, but it must not become the composer. There is software such as Grammarly and others that can be useful tools in improving grammatical usage, word choice and spelling. As a matter of policy however, Charlotte will be passing all written submissions through an AI detection software. This will also be available in London.
While this is unlikely to be a problem in Canada, the Church must take steps to be able to assure our readership and viewers that our message is authentic, and serve to ensure the integrity of our publications and the preservation of the sanctity of our message. Our writing must continue to be that which human beings are preparing under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Caution needs to be exercised about trusting AI sources. They are as valid as the programming, which can be designed to slant the content of the AI composed message, as has been noted in a number of cases.
We must remember, if a wrong spirit can cause errant thinking and behavior in a human being, than it follows that a similar malevolent spirit can manipulate the electronically produced information.
